Energize Boxborough
Community Organizer: Jay Krishnasamy
Our Goal
Our goal is to lower Boxborough's carbon emissions by 50% by 2030.
Our Story
Energize Boxborough is a project of Boxborough Sustainability Committee. During the summer of 2020 micro-burst storms swept through Boxborough, damaging trees and power lines. It was a wake-up call for many townspeople to realize that climate change is real and affecting us in Boxborough. In November of 2020 the Boxborough Select Board issued a Declaration to raise awareness about the importance of mitigating climate change. The Board pledged to support multiple initiatives to help preserve resources to sustain Boxborough and the world for future generations and charged Boxborough Sustainability Committe to lead the Town's effort to mitigate the causes and drivers of climate change.
From November 29, 2020 to February 18, 2021, Boxborough Sustainability Committee conducted a town-wide Climate Change Survey. The overwhelming conclusion from the Climate Change Survey was that action is needed before it is too late. Boxborough residents and businesses were ready to get started on some easy things as soon as possible. In the Summer of 2021, Boxborough Sustainability Committe reached out to neighboring towns and discovered that multiple towns, cities, and local organizations in Massachusetts are collaborating on an online web platform to develop tools, strategies, and resources to motivate and support their townspeople in a wide array of actions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and prepare them for a changing climate. With a generous grant from Littleton Electric Light Department (LELD) Boxborough joined this web platform and Energize Boxborough was born on November 4, 2021.
Our Mission
Boxborough is experiencing longer and more intense heat waves and droughts, excessive torrential rain, increased number of hurricanes and microbursts (mini-tornedoes), and a changing pattern of snow accumulation. The Town is taking steps to offset our vulnerabilities regarding culverts, roads, and municipal energy consumption. We, as townspeople, can also do our part to help slow this trend. We are accustomed to a comfortable lifestyle without realizing the affects of our abundance. While we can’t change all we do, we can select specific actions that will make a difference. Our mission at Energize Boxborough is to provide the residents and businesses of Boxborough with the tools and resources to address climate change at the local level. It suggests “actions” that are most impactful for us at the household and community level. It offers a method to create a personal climate plan of action and it provides information on topics like green heating and cooling, heat pumps, solar, carbon calculator, energy savings, weatherization and insulation, climate action groups, electric vehicles, farm to table, plus local related activities.
Energize Boxborough welcomes you!
